What Is Crackle Glaze(Kai Pian)?

The fine lines you see on the surface are called crackleor crazing. This is not a defectit is a cherished feature of Ru ware ceramics, prized for over a thousand years.

These cracks form naturally during the firing process due to the way the glaze and clay cool at different rates. Over time, as you use the cup, tea will seep into the fine lines, gradually creating beautiful, unique patterns that age with you.

Understanding Crackle Glaze (Crazing)

If you notice fine lines spreading across the surface of your cup, you are witnessing one of the most celebrated features of Ru ware ceramics: the crackle glaze.

What causes it?

During the firing process, the glaze and the clay body expand and contract at different rates. When the piece cools, the glaze shrinks slightly more than the clay, creating a network of fine, hairline cracks. This is a natural result of the materials and processnot a flaw.

Why is it valued?

For over a thousand years, Chinese scholars and tea connoisseurs have prized crackle glaze for its unique beauty. Each crack pattern is one of a kind, and over time, as you use the cup, tea gently seeps into the lines, creating subtle, amber-colored veins that grow more distinct with age. This process is often called nurturingthe cup, and it makes each piece deeply personal.

Is it durable?

Yes. The cracks remain on the glaze surface and do not affect the structural integrity of the cup. Your cup is safe for daily use, and with proper carerinsing with warm water and drying with a soft clothit will last for years.
